The latest addition to Mountain View-based Google's (NASDAQ: GOOG) product line is a free downloadable Java application that delivers Gmail through an interface for handheld devices.
Gmail users can already access their accounts through the browser on their mobile devices, but this application broadens the offering with search, conversation view, and automatic synchronization with the desktop version
Google said the new application is up to five times faster because it automatically pre-fetches messages, and allows for fewer keystrokes. Attachments, including files and photos, are viewable and automatically resized to fit the user's phone.
The application is currently compatible with all J2ME-enabled phones in the United States and works with a variety of carrier service plans.
